Understanding Your Dog's Body Language

Dogs communicate through body language. Understanding what your dog is telling you strengthens your bond and prevents misunderstandings.

**Tail Wagging**
A wagging tail doesn't always mean happiness. The speed and direction indicate different emotions. A stiff, high tail may signal alertness or aggression.

**Ears**
Pinned-back ears often indicate fear or submission. Erect, forward ears show interest or alertness.

**Eye Contact**
Direct eye contact can be a challenge or threat depending on the dog. Soft eyes with blinking indicate relaxation.

**Yawning**
Dogs yawn when tired, but also when stressed. Context matters - yawning during training may indicate anxiety.

**Play Bow**
A front lowered with rear in the air is an invitation to play. This is one of the clearest signs of a happy dog.
